The Studios at 1801 South Wabash is a 170 room Single Room Occupancy (SRO) residence. The building, developed jointly by Central City Housing Ventures and the Chicago Christian Industrial League responds to a pressing need for affordable housing in Chicago's South Loop. Finished in 1997, the building was the first new SRO constructed in the area since the 1940's. The fully furnished, 235 square foot rooms include a small kitchen and bathroom. Ground floor spaces include laundry, lounge, TV room, recreation areas, job training facilities and counseling services. A south facing courtyard provides a quiet green space for residents. McBride Kelley Baurer received the Chicago Building Congress Award of Recognition in 1999 for distinctive design and positive impact on the surrounding neighborhood.
